To make an incredibly long story short, this is what I will say about our Christmas Day. It was quite unusual and very much a mixed bag. We had the joy of celebrating Tom and Tessa’s engagement… … and we also had the concern of taking my grandfather to the ER wondering if he had had a stroke. He was showing all of the signs, dramatic change from the day before, weakness, unable to support himself, slurred speech and an overall appearance of being unaware. Having been through this before with several other family members we knew that this wasn’t something to mess around with so Adam and my dad took Grandpa Willard to the hospital.

The rest of the day lacked direction for the those of us still at home (although we did manage to eat a wonderful dinner), it just wasn’t your typical joyous Christmas Day while waiting to hear news about Grandpa’s health. We finally got a call from the guys at the hospital say that Grandpa hadn’t had a stroke, but had been close to a diabetic coma. His blood sugar levels were in the 600s when they should be in the 100s. Given 24 hours longer in his state of being on Christmas Day, he would have died. On a further note… Grandpa is doing much better, he was released to a nursing home so that they could continue monitor him while adjusting his meds and regulating his diet further.

Looking back I’m not even sure if we opened gifts that day or if we waited to do our exchange until the next day. I’m thinking it must have been the next day because Adam and my dad got home so late from the hospital. I know the rest of us spent much of the afternoon napping or watching Winnie The Pooh with Novia and later Tom and Tess broke out the caroms… which Novia had to try her hand at too.

So yes, it was an unusual Christmas to say the least; we didn’t get to do some of the things we wanted to like building a snowman or going sledding, but we still had a great time being together as a family.
