Hello, my name is Heidi and I'm so glad that you have dropped by. A Paige From Our Book is an imperfect mix of stories from our life, diy projects, and our family's favorite recipes. But more often you will find thoughts on growing in Christ and encouragement for the weary. Grab your favorite cuppa and and join me as I share from my life, serving an extraordinary God in the very ordinary.

During the summer months {at least here in Minnesota} we find ourselves running from BBQ to pool party, to summer concert series, to athletic activities, up to the lake cabin and back again. These are all wonderful parts of summer and happily contrast our normal school/work routines, but they can leave us feeling exhausted and often spiritually drained.
Rest | A Paige From Our Book

It is easy to seek out rest in the idles this world has to offer, but that respite lasts but a moment unlike the rest we find we find in Jesus. He alone brings peace to our heart, mind and soul that is beyond comprehension {Psalm 62:1 & 5; Phil. 4:6-7; John 14:27}. When our souls are filled with grief and over-ridden with the cares of this world, Jesus tells us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light {Matt. 11: 28-30}. Life is just plain heavy at times with concerns over money, relationships, health, children, jobs and even vacations.

But Jesus is always waiting to comfort us with His quiet love {Zeph. 3:17}.

Rest | A Paige From Our Book

Perhaps your sorrow and your stress have seemed to overwhelm you, knocking your feet from underneath you. Perhaps you have spent this summer trying to find relaxation in a flurry of fun activities and yet your soul feels barren.

Jesus calls you to come and find your rest in Him.

There is no condemnation in His eyes, no undertones of guilt in His whisper to come find your rest in Him, only His loving outstretched arms waiting to enfold you in grace and mercy. He longs to fill your parched soul with the Living water that will refresh and restore you

to health

to joy

to hopepeace and righteousness.

Rest | A Paige From Our Book

So come.  Come find your REST in God alone.

Fear | A Paige From Our Book

Fear can often seem like a mountain whose terrain is insurmountable. We can feel incapacitated and therefore lose our motivation to accomplish even life’s menial tasks.

BUT we don’t have to stay there.

Joshua encouraged Israel and encourages us in Deut. 31:6, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because if them, for the Lord your God goes with you; HE will never leave you nor forsake you.”

David, when running for his life chose truth over being paralyzed by fear, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God whose Word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid.”  When we place our fearful eyes on Jesus we can steadily walk (or crawl if we must) onward knowing that He is with us no matter what the road looks like. His love knows NO bounds and His faithfulness is NOT dependent on our performance.

So as you stumble and fall on your journey, remember Jesus is with you and watches over you with eyes filled with LOVE and COMPASSION.

Cling to Jesus and walk forward with COURAGE and FAITH!

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Power;
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then, in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
– Day By Day by Karolina W. Sandell-Berg

It is such a comfort knowing that our Lord is always near with mercy and comfort for whatever trials we may be facing. We never walk dark roads alone and even if it seems like no one else sees your suffering, our Heavenly Father sees and knows the burdens on your heart. Cast your cares on Him, for He cares for you. (1Peter 5:7)

I Wasn't Prepared | A Paige From Our Book

I wasn’t prepared for the grief that would overtake my soul.

My father is about 8 months in to his diagnoses of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. To look at him, he seems very healthy except for the noticeable lump on his neck. I have no reason to believe that he will die from this cancer anytime soon and yet the awareness of his mortality has slapped me in the face.

I have sat at my desk in front of this screen on more than several occasions to write about how cancer has affected my daily life, but thoughts have been jumbled, words inadequate or simply absent. Last night I turned the TV channel to a show I rarely watch. Dateline was airing an autobiographical interview with Tom Brokaw on his recent battle with  multiple myeloma. There are differences between his story and my dad’s, but as he spoke and as his family shared, there was much that I/we as a family could relate to.  The interview helped these few thoughts and words break free.

I wasn’t prepared for the depth of internal and emotional struggle my dad’s second journey with cancer would be.

I wasn’t prepared for the grief that would overtake my soul.

BUT… God has used my dad’s cancer and my personal struggle with it refine me in ways I didn’t know I needed refining. He has peeled back layers of my heart and revealed areas where I thought I was trusting God.

But in reality I wasn’t fully.

“I no longer can be your little girl. I now need to take on the role as an adult woman who is going to take care of her dad.”
“I’m no longer the little girl.” – Tom Brokaw’s daughter

We aren’t ever prepared to really think about our parents’ mortality, but I have been comforted by a truth that God gently whispered to my heart during worship a few weeks ago. A truth that I have known my whole life, but wasn’t walking in:

All the days of my dad’s life are held in the hand of my Heavenly Father

and nothing

not even CANCER can change that. {Rom. 8:38-39}

I Wasn't Prepared | A Paige From Our Book

I’ve had to ask myself if I’m clinging to my daddy and his earthly life more than I’m clinging to Jesus.

My identity is not found in the life of my earthly father, no matter how much I love him.

My identity is not found in being a wife,

a mom,

a daughter,

a ministry leader,

or who I am in relationship with.

My identity MUST be found in Christ.

Can I truly say that all I have is Christ? It is my prayer that God will indeed make this so in my heart.

Do you struggle to see God as your loving Father? Do you think He is good, loving and has a good plan for everyone except you? This is a spiritual hurdle that is becoming more common as more children are growing up not knowing a good and loving earthly father.
Abba! Father! | A Paige From Our Book

If you are among those who struggle to find your identity as a beloved child of the Heavenly Father, I pray that you can find encouragement from the unwavering truth of the Word of God.
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” – Rom. 8:14

“In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ,
according to the purpose of HIS will. . .” – Eph. 1:4b-5

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” – Rom. 8:15
If you have been predestined for adoption by God, He also wants you to feel and experience His love. Maybe you are running out of fear of being disappointed by God because of your history with an earthly father. Know that your Heavenly Father will pursue you. His love will not let you go. Just like that father of the prodigal son, He is waiting to embrace you with arms wide open.

Pray and confess your unbelief and then ask the Spirit to give you faith to trust that God is who He says He is and that you are now who He says you are {because you are in HIM}. Ask the Spirit to grant grace for you to feel and experience the truth of God’s love.

“Because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit
who has been given to us.” – Rom. 5:5

Our bodies need vitamin D to help keep us healthy. It’s been shown to lower the risk of disease.
Vitamin D for the Soul | A Paige From Our Book

Joy {not necessarily happiness} is the same for our spiritual health. When we have joy that is flowing from the knowledge of and delight of being rooted in Jesus, it helps our spirits fight against remaining sin.

Joy isn’t our response  to our circumstances, rather it determines our response to our circumstances.

Lacking the spiritual vitamin JOY? Spend some time meditating on Jesus and His work on your behalf. In Christ it is not only as if you have never sinned, it’s also as if you have ALWAYS obeyed. Knowing that you are saved from eternal separation from God should produce joy like nothing else!

xo - Heidi

PS: We all go through seasons of time when having joy, choosing joy is very much a fight. It may seem elusive, but my encouragement is still the same, be in the Word.

Even when it seems as though the truth is not changing your affections for Christ, the pursuit of knowing Jesus through His Word will produce fruit in your life. Fruit trees remain dormant for a season, but soon they flower and a bountiful harvest of fruit is produced.

There are many things that give us momentary satisfaction, but the delights of this life are merely broken cisterns that won’t hold water {Jeremiah 2:13}.
Satisfy Us In The Morning | A Paige From Our Book

Jesus’ unfailing, never stopping, never giving up, unfailing, unwavering, steadfast love alone will bring satisfaction that will sustain us for ALL of our days.

Not sure if anyone really loves you? KNOW that God loves you and sent His one and only Son {an extension of His own personhood} to be crucified to save you from your sin. BUT He didn’t stay dead. God’s sign of approval of the Son’s sacrifice was to raise Him from the dead and seated Him {Jesus} at His {the Father} right hand.

The Greatest Expression of Love Ever Given | A Paige From Our Book

HOW CAN YOU BE SAVED? Acknowledge that you are a sinner. Confess your sin to Jesus and ask Him to forgive your sins and save you. Place your faith in His finished work on the cross to pay the debt of your sins before a holy God. Thank Him for loving you when you hated Him and for dying in your place.

Now find a local church and get involved so that you can grow in your knowledge and relationship with your Savior.

Unfaithful people surround us daily; in fact we’re often unfaithful. Perhaps not in regard to our marriage or serious relationship, but more than likely we’re unfaithful to God. How many earthly treasures do we value with our time and our money more than we value our Creator; our Saviour? How many times do our affections for Christ grow stale and we stop believing He is who He says He is?

Our love is fickle. In and of ourselves, it diminishes over time. . .

I Have Love You | A Paige From Our Book

. . . if not infused with life and breath from the everlasting source of everlasting, eternal, completely unconditional love of our redeemer, Jesus Christ.

I’m so thankful that His love for me is ever lasting regardless of my sins and failures. That because of His steadfast, everlasting love, His faithfulness to me will continue throughout eternity!
